Pre-reduction in the heating furnace is used to reduce a sample of carbon and ammonium metavanadate. Then, final reduction takes place. Following the completion of the final reduction, the sample will be cooled in the furnace. The temperature inside the heating furnace ranges from 650-670 to the maximum setting of 450-670. Heating furnaces are capable for holding the samples for up to four hours. This temperature and time can make the sample’s surface harden and inhibit the reduction process.
Following the pre-reduction the primary reduction product is V2O3, the remaining carbides, and some VN. The sample is then kept at 13001500 during the final reduction. In the heat preservation, both CO2 and CO2 are produced. After heat preservation, it is removed by the introduced nitrogen. VN is then obtained. The nitrogen flow rate during the reaction is 210270mL/min. This nitrogen flow rate can both meet the kinetic requirements of the reduction process and also protect against the high temperature reaction caused by excess nitrogen.
