HfB2 will lose its oxidation resistance significantly if heated to 1600°C or lower than 1 atmosphere. This will result in the B2O3 (one HfB2 oxidation product) boiling above 1400C. The protective oxide layer is formed.
3. HfB2’s strength and thermal properties allow it to be used in ultra-high-speed spacecraft. HfB2 is able to form aerodynamic shapes, unlike polymers or composites. It also does not ablate after reentry.
4. Hafnium Diboride is being investigated for potential use in the manufacture of nuclear reactor control rods.
