Iodine and Aluminum – Synthesis Reactions

In this experiment, we use powdered aluminium metal and powdered elemental iodine to make aluminum iodide. A few drops of water are added to the mixture, and after a short time, a vigorous reaction occurs. In the resulting purple vapours, we can see that the aluminum reacts with the iodine in an exergonic reaction.

The iodine is oxidized to form a purple vapour, while the aluminum undergoes a transformation to a hexa hydrate, which is then evaporated into the air. This is a spectacular and exciting experiment to see! It is a great way to teach students about the elements of science and how they can be used in chemistry.
