In hot-dip galvanizing, the metal is dipped in a bath of molten zinc. The molten zinc is applied to the surface of the piece by lowering it into the bath at an angle that allows air to escape from the tube and other potential air pockets, making for a seamless coating.
Another advantage of zinc coatings is their low permeability to air. This is especially important when using perforated tubes in watery applications such as agriculture or irrigation.
When in contact with strong alkaline detergent solutions, the zinc coating will develop a protective coating that reduces corrosion. This coating does not provide complete protection against corrosion, however, because it is only a partial barrier to water in the presence of a strong alkaline solution.
In order to protect against contamination, the collection and transport tubes should be certified as metal-free. If contamination concerns exist, confirm specimens with a second sample collected in a certified metal-free tube.
